Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying Self-Tanner

Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying Self-Tanner

Hi there! As the founding formulator of SunFX America, I’ve spent years perfecting products to help you achieve a natural, healthy glow without exposure to harmful UV rays. Over time, I’ve also seen (and made!) a few common mistakes that can lead to streaks or patchiness.

Here are my top five tips to ensure a flawless tan every time.

1. Skipping the pre tan preparation

Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying Self-TannerThis one’s huge! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard about tanning mishaps that come down to missing that crucial prep. Exfoliating your skin 24 hours before applying self-tanner is essential. It smooths out any dry patches, so the tan glides on perfectly. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, and ankles—anywhere skin tends to be rougher. Prepping will make all the difference in your results.

2. Applying Too Much Product on Dry Areas

Dry skin absorbs more product, often leading to dark patches on knees, elbows, and ankles. Try applying a thin layer of moisturizer just before you tan in these areas; it helps balance the product and gives a softer, more natural tone. Our SunFX self-tanners are designed to blend well, but I’ve found a little extra care on dry spots can elevate your results. Try our SunFX barrier Cream especially around soles of feet and see what you think.

3. Neglecting to Blend Well

Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying Self-TannerWe’ve all been there! Streaks and lines happen when the product isn’t properly blended. My favorite trick? Use a tanning mitt and blend in circular motions. A mitt is more forgiving, too, helping you achieve an even finish with minimal effort.

When using our tanning mists on my face, I use our fabulously soft blending brush. I love this brush and have a one of my foundation and another for my blush and contouring!

With our SunFX tanners, blending feels effortless, but the mitt will make your tan look salon-level.

4. Rushing the Drying Process

When it comes to drying, patience really pays off. Tight clothing, leaning, or any movement right after tanning can leave your tan uneven. Give your self-tanner about 10–15 minutes to set before dressing, and wear loose clothing for a bit. Our formulas are fast-drying, but letting it settle fully helps lock in that flawless color.

5. Forgetting to Hydrate Post-Tan

Keeping your skin hydrated is the best way to extend your tan. Moisturize daily with one of our tan-friendly lotions or oils; they will keep your skin soft and your tan looking fresh. I formulated SunFX self-tanners with nourishing ingredients for a reason—healthy, hydrated skin holds color better and fades more evenly. Plus, who doesn’t love smooth, glowing skin?

Avoid these five common mistakes, and you’ll be on your way to a beautiful, long-lasting tan with SunFX. I’m thrilled to be a part of your tanning routine, and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Here’s to glowing, natural color all year long!

Warmly,
The SunFX Team
